My Top 10 Albums of 2010

It's an opinion.

1. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
This isn't rap, hip-hop or pop. This is a completely new sound. It's absolute brilliance; the music is so unique and fresh that it is unimaginable that someone could've produced it almost singlehandedly. Rolling Stone sums it up well; "Nobody halfway sane could have made this album".

2. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
When it comes to complete albums that lack nothing, Arcade Fire are the best at it. It's a great album worth a dozen thorough listens.

3. Future Islands - In Evening Air
A very different sound that I heard this year. Although short, this album is beautiful. I've probably listened to Tin Man over 50 times.

4. Gayngs - Relayted
Being a big fan of Bon Iver and the 80s, I loved this album. Very chilled and very 10cc.

5. The Black Keys - Brothers
A great sixth album from the duo. Their sound is very cool, like a baked Ray LaMontagne.

6. Ratatat - LP4
This was my most anticipated album other than Kanye's and it delivers.

7. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
Not evolving much, that's how I like bands sometimes, especially when I look at Biffy and Kings. You Wanted A Hit is a perfect song where the lyrics sum up what they're all about.

8. Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here
No one has been through more than this man since their last release. His first album in 16 years, the story of his comeback is touching. This is more poetry than music.

9. Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon II: Legend Of Mr. Rager.
I really like this rapper as he has more of a rock influence than standard hip-hop. It's very mellow and deep.

10. Perfume Genius - Learning
My confession is that I only heard this artist through Drownedinsound's top albums. Regardless, this is a brilliant solo album. Reminds of how Zach Condon started as The Real People.

11. Deftones - Diamond Eyes
Back to their original ways and it's a hit. Wake up soon Chi.

12. Dangermouse & Sparklehorse - Dark Night of The Soul
A various artist album, which is indeed very dark. Delayed for almost a year due to the suicides of performing artists Mark Linkous and Vic Chesnutt. RIP.

Oops. 12.

One of the best music videos and some semi-new stuff

This music video for Cinnamon Chasers won SXSW last year and it totally went over my radar. It's brilliant and I've attached the track below to give you that fuller sound. HD this bad boy...

Next up are couple of tracks that I cannot leave alone. First track is a brilliant remix of Bon Iver's Skinny Love, if you haven't heard much of him; make sure you check out his album For Emma, Forever ago. The final tracks are from Sidelock, a bloody cracking DnB geezer.

I love this song, too much

Perfume Genius

Mike Hadreas will hit the summit of most top album lists of 2010. The lyrics in Mr Petersen are pretty harrowing about a relationship with a teacher who commits suicide.

Lovely, £9k a year...

Although i'm done with uni after this year, i'm still miffed and in a revolutionary mood. So here's Billy Bragg and The Smiths.

In remembrance

As we come to the end of 2010, I just wanted to post some great tracks from some very talented artists that passed away this year.

Time to dance

Deadmau5 and Simian Mobile Disco have released new albums very recently and here's some examples of the great beats that clubs need to get involved in. I've also added a song by The Naked & Famous who had a number one album in NZ this Summer and will be released in the UK next year. Enjoy.

8-Bit Brilliance

Like Ben Marwood, this band from Reading UK have been recently signed and should be expected to be big in 2011. Great sound.

There's sampling and then there's stealing

There's an Aphex Twin song that annoys me so much, but only because it's brilliant. Named Avril 14th, it's really mellow and has a great tune at the end, which almost ends instantly, therefore aggravating as I just want there to be more to it! Kanye recently sampled this last section on his 5th album, however, The Lonely Island also did the same, but before Kanye and they sound very similar.

Ben Marwood

After recently signing a record deal, I'm looking forward to his new album in 2011. Here are some examples of his work...

3 Jealous Guys

From the original, to my favourite and finally the most creative cover...

A warm welcome

Yo, what this site will aim to do is cover a wide variety of artists over multiple genres. New stuff, old stuff, and essentially great things you may not have heard. Less words, more music. Mainly songs that aren't available on my Spotify so I have a place to listen to them. First up; a remix by Jamie Smith from The xx, where he remixed this year's comeback album by one of the greatest black poem writers, Gil Scott-Heron. The remixed album entitled "We're New Here" is due for release on the 21st of Feb 2011. You may have heard Gil before on the ultimate track (middle link) from Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy". Let's crack on.
